Karma: Community-Driven Reputation

Karma systems solve a fundamental problem in online communities: how do you distinguish helpful, valuable contributors from troublemakers when everyone has the same posting privileges? BotWave's karma system answers this by letting the community itself decide. When a member posts something helpful, funny, or valuable, other members can upvote it with a thumbs-up reaction. When someone posts something unhelpful or disruptive, they receive a thumbs-down. Over time, each member accumulates a karma score that reflects how the community values their contributions.

The /karma command shows any user's current karma score, and /karmaboard displays the leaderboard of top karma holders. This creates a visible reputation hierarchy that is earned rather than assigned — members cannot buy or request karma, they can only earn it through genuine community participation. The leaderboard becomes a point of pride for top contributors and a goal for newer members to aspire to.

XP and Leveling Through Participation

While karma measures the quality of contributions, the XP system measures quantity and consistency. Every time a member sends a message, they earn a small amount of XP. Over time, active members accumulate XP and level up, with each level requiring more XP than the last. The /level command shows your current level and XP progress, and /leaderboard ranks all members by their total XP.

The leveling system creates a progression mechanic that gives members a sense of achievement simply for participating. Reaching a new level feels like a milestone, and the leaderboard adds a competitive element that encourages members to stay active. Unlike karma, which can go down if a post is downvoted, XP only goes up — it is a permanent record of participation that rewards long-term engagement. The /rank command shows a specific user's rank, which is useful for comparing yourself to others or checking where a new member stands.

Trust Scores: Behavioral Assessment

The trust score system takes karma and leveling a step further by combining multiple behavioral signals into a single trustworthiness metric. A user's trust score is calculated from their karma, warning history, activity level, time in the community, and other factors. Members who are consistently helpful and active get high trust scores, while those with warnings or low participation get lower scores.

Trust scores are not just for display — they integrate with other BotWave modules. The join request manager can automatically approve or decline new join requests based on whether the applicant's trust score meets a configurable threshold. Admins can use trust scores to identify potentially problematic members before they cause issues. The /trust command checks any user's score, and /trusts shows the trust leaderboard. Admins can manually adjust scores with /trustset in cases where the automatic calculation does not reflect the member's actual standing.

Emoji Status Rewards

Telegram supports custom emoji statuses — small emoji that appear next to a user's name in the chat. BotWave's emoji rewards module lets you assign custom emoji statuses to members who reach certain levels or karma thresholds. When a member qualifies, they can claim their reward with /statusreward, and the bot sets their Telegram emoji status automatically.

This feature creates a visible badge of achievement that other members can see in real time. A member with a special emoji status stands out in the chat, signaling their seniority and contribution level. It is a non-intrusive reward that does not clutter the chat with messages but still provides recognition. The /emojiid command lets admins set which custom emoji to use for the reward, so the badge can be branded to match your community's identity.

How Karma and XP Work Together

Karma and XP serve complementary purposes. Karma rewards the quality of individual contributions — a single excellent post can earn significant karma if many members upvote it. XP rewards the habit of participation — showing up and chatting regularly accumulates XP over time regardless of whether individual posts are upvoted. Together, they create a balanced incentive structure that rewards both quality and consistency.

A member who posts rarely but always delivers high-quality content will have high karma but moderate XP. A member who chats constantly but posts average content will have high XP but moderate karma. Both are valuable community members, and the dual-system approach recognizes both types of contribution. The leaderboards for each metric are separate, so members can compete on whichever axis they excel at.
